Poppy Appeal
Great Britain added 23 December 2008
A Lest We Forget miniature sheet issued 8 November 2007, comprising a 1st poppy design and four 78p regionals, has been discovered missing silver. Unfortunately the finder split the miniature sheet for postal use prior to spotting the error. The England and Wales regionals were used on mail sent to Asia (attempts to retrieve the stamps have so far failed) and the Northern Ireland regional doesn't include silver in the design. However, the 78p Scotland regional and 1st poppy design have been salvaged and are to be offered by Essex Stamp Auctions in late February 2009. The error results in the loss of the Queen's head and denomination on the 1st stamp and leaves the 78p Scotland regional with the Queen's head and denomination white. To date no other examples of the error have been reported.

Modern GB Surpasses £500,000 At Grosvenor
Great Britain added 2 December 2008
Grosvenor’s Specialised Great Britain auction of 27-28 November 2008 realised £450,000 plus premiums for the 600-odd lots featuring Queen Elizabeth II material. Of the lots on offer, two-thirds sold. The auction included the third part of the Davenport modern errors collection and many rare and diverse pieces from other sellers. The sheer quantity of items, and scale of duplication in places, meant realisations generally stayed within the estimate range. Unique and visual items fared better than mid-range material, but rarely beat upper estimate. Despite realisations being lower than six months ago, there were surprises and several items surpassed £20,000:
+ 1961 Parliamentary Conference 1s 6d with green virtually missing sold for £10,000 (upper estimate) plus premiums.
+ 1969 Concorde set in imperforate imprimatur blocks of four sold for £15,000 (upper estimate) plus premiums.
+ 1967 Flowers 4d block with violet missing sold for £10,000 (upper estimate). The block is believed unique with just a handful of singles recorded to have been affected by the error.
+ 1972 General Anniversaries 3p traffic light block with black virtually missing from the lower two stamps realised £21,000 (upper estimate £20,000) plus premiums.
+ 1985 Insects 34p half sheet with lower left vertical pair imperforate made £9,200 plus premiums against a catalogue value of £7,000.
+ 1990 Stamp World miniature sheet with recess black inverted sold for £22,000 plus premiums.
Realisations aside, there were a number of previously uncatalogued varieties and errors in unrecorded formats.
1981 Butterflies 18p imperforate pair. Probably of proof status given the pair is creased, lacks gum and has a slight shift of black to the right. It made lower estimate of £350 plus premiums.
1997 King Henry VIII Death Anniversary imperforate pair from the lower left of a pane. Realised £4,000 plus premiums.
2001 Christmas 65p imperforate pane Previously just nine imperforate pairs were recorded from a discovery at a Kent post office.
A fourth auction of Davenport material is scheduled for late 2009. This will include unsolds from the previous auctions together with numerous other major items like the 1961 Post Office Savings Bank missing black.

Colourless Kowhai
New Zealand added 3 October 2008
A quantity of the 3d Kowhai definitive issued from 1 September 1960 has appeared on the market missing three out of a total of four colours. All detail is lost and just the blue background colour remains. The error was first offered by Ashford Stamps of Auckland in September 2008 and was claimed to have been discovered by a postmaster at the time of issue. Aside from the missing colours, the remaining blue is a different shade to the five acknowledged shades from the issue. Gum, watermark and perforations are identical to normal stamps. The error is currently being offered at NZD $1,500 by Ashford.
